Water explodes in every direction as two pale ranch horses charge through the creek, manes streaming, mouths open, the whole scene dissolving into a white cascade of spray and motion that is more impressionist painting than photograph. Shot in black and white, the image loses nothing in the translation — if anything the absence of color intensifies the drama, reducing the moment to pure tonal energy: the horses emerging from the white chaos of the water, their forms half-dissolved in spray, the creek erupting around them with the full force of animals moving fast through shallow water. The foreground horse turns its head with an expression of pure exhilaration — open-mouthed, eyes alive, completely in the moment — while the paint horse behind drives forward with equal abandon.
