Dally — Rope on the Horn, Working Saddle, Montana

From $450 Click photo for printing options and to purchase

The dally is one of the defining skills of the working cowboy — that practiced wrap of rope around the saddle horn in the instant after a catch, binding the catch to the horse with a coil that has to be fast, tight, and exactly right. This image stops time at that coil: the rope wound snug around the horn, the tooled leather of the saddle worn smooth with use, a second loop of rope arcing away into the soft gray background where the work continues out of frame. Shot in close detail in black and white, the image is a study in the texture and craft of working ranch equipment — leather, rope, and steel rendered with the kind of clarity that rewards a large print format and a slow look. Dally belongs to the same family of Western detail images as Rodeo Chaps, Spurs and Dirt, and Working the Rope — quiet studies in the tools and traditions of the cowboy life that together form one of the most distinctive threads in the collection, and that pair beautifully with the collection's broader action and landscape pieces.
