The hazer has the steer lined up and the bulldogger is in the air — that split-second between leaving the saddle and making contact with the steer that defines the entire event. His legs are still clearing the horse behind him as his arms reach for the steer's horns, and the steer is still driving forward with everything it has, the outcome entirely undecided. The hazer aboard the left horse has his arm raised, reading the run, while all three animals surge through the frame in controlled chaos. Shot in black and white, the image resolves the complexity of the moment into clear, graphic planes of motion — and the arena fence and tent structure behind give just enough context to place the action without competing with it. The Drop is a companion to The Wrestle from Cheyenne Frontier Days, but more intimate in frame and more suspended in time — where that image is all dust and outcome, this one is pure anticipation, the moment before everything is decided, and the most technically demanding frame in rodeo photography to catch exactly right.
