Calved from the Vatnajökull glacier — Europe's largest ice cap — carried through the extraordinary blue waters of the Jökulsárlón lagoon, and finally delivered by the tide onto the black volcanic sand of Iceland's south coast, each ice chunk that washes up on this beach is at the end of a journey that began perhaps a thousand years ago in the compressed snow of a glacier that is itself now retreating faster than at any point in recorded history. The Last Ice honors that journey with the reverence it deserves. Shot in black and white with a long exposure that transforms the swirling tide into silk, the ice chunks emerge from the flowing water with a luminous, almost jewel-like clarity — their forms ancient and irregular, shaped by forces of compression and melt that no human process can replicate — while the dramatic stormy sky above completes a composition of extraordinary atmosphere and emotional weight.
