The absolute black of the coat and the surrounding background collapse into a single field of darkness from which only the essential elements emerge — the two eyes, each carrying a precise catch light that is the sole source of brightness in the lower half of the image, and the braid, its tight, regular pattern a note of human craft and care running through a composition otherwise entirely about the natural architecture of the horse's face.
