From the darkness, a horse takes shape. The rim light finds the curve of the poll, the alert ear, the strong jaw, and the extraordinary mane flowing outward into the shadows — and in that narrow band of light the whole character of the Friesian breed is revealed. This is equine portraiture in the tradition of the Old Masters: a near-black ground, a single light source tracing the subject's edge, and shadow doing as much work as light to define form and presence. The mane catches the light differently along its length — some strands luminous, others dissolving back into the dark — and the effect is at once graphic and deeply romantic, an image that rewards slow looking and reveals more the longer you spend with it. Out of Darkness is the most formally elegant of the Friesian series — where Black Majesty is motion and Rising from the Seais power, this is pure presence, the stallion reduced to light and shadow and the essential force of his own being.
