Ghost of the Prairie captures one of the American West's most iconic and least celebrated animals in a moment of pure, alert stillness: a pronghorn buck standing alone in the vast golden sagebrush steppe of Yellowstone, his dark curved horns rising above him with elegant authority, his gaze meeting the camera with the particular wariness of an animal that has survived on this landscape for hundreds of thousands of years by seeing everything and trusting nothing. The prairie stretches behind him in every direction, a warm sea of amber grass and silver-green sage dissolving into soft focus at the horizon, and the pronghorn occupies the center of all that space with a solitary, self-contained dignity that is quietly extraordinary. He is at once completely visible and completely elusive — the paradox at the heart of a species that relies on open ground and extraordinary speed rather than cover and concealment, an animal built for a landscape with no place to hide and no need of one.
