A dozen ranch horses hit the river at full speed and the water explodes around them — chestnuts and paints, grays and bays, all moving together through the rocky crossing with the momentum of a herd that has done this before and has no intention of slowing down. The spray catches the light and the reflections shatter beneath their hooves, and the dark conifer forest of the Wyoming mountains rises behind them as a backdrop of deep green that makes the warm colors of the horses glow all the brighter by contrast.
