This is the Ngorongoro Crater at its most layered — a full-maned male lion commanding the foreground with the authority of an animal that owns every inch of his territory, while behind him a second male rests in the grass and cape buffalo move through the mist at the crater floor. The depth of the scene tells the complete story of this extraordinary ecosystem in a single frame: predator and prey sharing the same ancient bowl of land, separated by nothing more than the lion's momentary stillness.
