There is a particular kind of stillness that belongs only to lions at rest — a repose so complete, so utterly unguarded, that it reads less as relaxation than as a declaration. The King and His Queen captures that stillness in one of its most beautiful expressions: a magnificent maned male and his lioness settled together on the green grass of the Tanzanian savanna, their bodies close, their gazes cast outward in different directions as though between them they are watching the whole world at once. The male is extraordinary — his mane full and dark-tipped and rich with the particular amber and shadow tones that speak to age and dominance and long seasons on the savanna — and yet it is the quiet intimacy of the pair together that gives the image its deepest resonance. The lioness leans slightly into him, her expression alert and composed, and the two animals form a composition so naturally balanced it might have been arranged — the reclining female in the foreground, the upright male rising behind her with a dignity that is completely unperformed. The background is a soft wash of deep savanna green, throwing the warm tones of fur and mane into luminous relief and giving the image a painterly quality that elevates it well beyond the documentary.
