The Black Shore is an aerial portrait of Reynisfjara beach at Vík, Iceland, one of the most dramatic and geologically distinctive coastal landscapes on earth — the volcanic black sand that gives the beach its extraordinary character the product of millennia of lava meeting the sea and shattering into the fine, dark grains that make this shoreline unlike any other in the world. Shot in black and white from above, the image reduces the scene to its essential geometry — the dark mass of the beach, the white line of the surf, the pale grey of the North Atlantic stretching to the horizon, and above it all a stormy sky that mirrors the drama of the landscape below. The diagonal composition is the image's great strength, the surf line leading the eye from the lower left to the distant headland barely visible at the upper right, the sense of the beach extending beyond the frame in both directions giving the image a scale and sweep that the vertical format contains without diminishing.
